Kolkata, May 18: Biswajit Poddar, also known as Sona Pappu, appeared before Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials at the CGO Complex in Salt Lake on Monday. He had been missing for months in connection with a syndicate case.
The police had been searching for him since his name surfaced in the Rabindra Sarovar incident in February. Although he frequently went live on social media, his whereabouts remained unknown. The ED had previously raided his home as part of the investigation into the syndicate case. However, Pappu unexpectedly showed up at the ED office on Monday, claiming he had done nothing wrong.
When asked if he feared arrest, Pappu responded, “I have done nothing wrong.” His name emerged during a clash at Rabindra Sarovar in February, which involved two rival groups. In April, the ED conducted a search at his residence, recovering approximately 2 crore rupees, along with a luxury car and several property documents.
ED sources revealed that multiple FIRs have been filed against Pappu, who faces charges including extortion, land grabbing, and intimidation. According to the ED, he operates several syndicates in the Kasba and Ballygunge areas of South Kolkata.
Additionally, a case has been registered against him under the Arms Act. The ED initiated its investigation following these allegations. Earlier, the central agency had arrested construction businessman Joy Kamdar in connection with the case. Based on information gathered, the ED raided the home of Kolkata police officer Shantanu Sinha Biswas on Fern Road last month. Biswas was summoned for questioning regarding the Pappu case and was later arrested.
As Pappu had been missing for an extended period, investigators suspected he had fled to another state. They believe he may have received money through hawala while in hiding. It remains to be seen whether he will be arrested in connection with the syndicate case.
