Mexico City, July 1: In a recent match at the FIFA World Cup 2026, Mexico triumphed over Ecuador with a score of 2-0 in the Round of 32. Following this defeat, Ecuador’s head coach, Sebastián Becase, has decided to resign from his position.
Becase stated that stepping down was the right choice after failing to meet the tournament’s objectives set for Ecuador. He also mentioned that the World Cup has historically marked the end of his contracts with the Ecuadorian Football Federation. Becase took charge of the Ecuadorian team in August 2024.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Becase expressed gratitude towards Francisco Egas (President of the Ecuadorian Football Federation) for the trust and freedom given to him. “I am leaving a position that I hold in high regard. We have built a legacy. I am thankful for this journey and adventure, and I want to say just ‘thank you’ to all the players and the country,” he said.
He added, “When we were together, this group of players inspired hope. Mexico clearly played better than us. We did not perform to our best abilities. We deserved to lose.”
Although Ecuador’s World Cup campaign ended in the first knockout round, the team rebounded from a poor start in the South American qualifiers under Becase’s leadership, finishing second behind Argentina. They conceded only five goals in 18 qualification matches, outperforming Colombia, Uruguay, and Brazil.
During his tenure, Ecuador won 9 matches, drew 12, and lost 3. Before losing to Ivory Coast in their opening World Cup match, the team had gone 19 matches without defeat. After the loss to Ivory Coast and a draw against tournament debutants Curacao, Ecuador secured their place in the Round of 32 with a remarkable 2-1 victory over Germany in their final group match.
Following Ecuador’s advancement to the Round of 32, President Daniel Noboa declared a national holiday.
