New Delhi, August 29: The United Nations has called for the resumption of dialogue between the United States and Iran. A spokesperson for the UN reported that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged both nations to engage in talks to resolve their disputes through diplomacy.
When asked about the stalled discussions between the US and Iran six months after the onset of conflict, spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stated, “This marks a tragic milestone as we reach six months of ongoing strife. We reiterate that the only solution is a diplomatic one. We urge both the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran to engage in meaningful conversations.”
According to reports from Xinhua News Agency, Dujarric emphasized that the UN fully supports mediation efforts by Qatar, Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, and that the Secretary-General remains in contact with these nations. He highlighted the devastating humanitarian and economic consequences of this conflict, which include global economic impacts on food supplies, the inability to deliver humanitarian goods, limited availability of fertilizers, and rising energy prices.
The spokesperson noted that the Secretary-General’s personal envoy, Jean Arnault, is available to assist the parties and mediators in reaching a sustainable solution. The US and Israel initiated military strikes against Iran on February 28. In retaliation, Iran targeted Israeli and US military bases in the Gulf.
The Strait of Hormuz has been largely blocked, causing significant disruptions in the flow of oil and other goods. On June 18, the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding, committing both countries to engage in talks within 60 days to reach a final agreement. However, the future of these discussions remains uncertain as tensions between the two nations have escalated once again.
