Chennai, August 29: IIT Madras is set to launch a new invasion sport called ‘Fiball’ as part of its National Sports Day celebration. This game emphasizes speed, teamwork, and technical decision-making, featuring three teams competing on a goal court. The event will include IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti, faculty members, and students.
Prof. Satyanarayana N. Gummadi, Dean of IIT Madras, shared insights about the game. “Last April, we introduced the Omega Ball game, a unique take on football. We thought, why not create a game for India? That’s when we conceptualized Fiball. We specifically chose basketball as the base game because it is not widely played in many schools, especially government and rural schools, due to the high cost of courts. Fiball is designed around this concept, allowing 21 players to participate. Each team will have its own basket, defending against the other two teams from scoring.”
A third-year B.Tech student expressed enthusiasm, stating, “This is a fantastic idea. I had never heard of Fiball before. I’m excited to play it, and it will also benefit my basketball skills. Fiball could become popular in India soon.”
Final-year student Harshita added, “This year has been remarkable for launching traditional sports at IIT Madras. We have already introduced the Omega game. Given India’s population and space availability, there is a need to bring more sports. Basketball and football are crucial. Fiball requires minimal infrastructure, making it likely to gain popularity quickly.”
