London, July 1: Australia has clinched a spot in the final of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, defeating the West Indies by 8 wickets on Tuesday. Australian wicketkeeper-batter Beth Mooney credited her team’s consistent performance for reaching the final. This marks the sixth-time champion’s record eighth appearance in the final.
Batting first at the Kennington Oval, the West Indies managed to score 125 runs while losing 7 wickets. In response, Australia claimed victory in just 13 overs.
After the win, Mooney highlighted the contributions of Ashleigh Gardner, Georgia Wareham, and Georgia Voll, emphasizing how Australia’s strength, versatility in roles, and ability to produce match-winners have brought them closer to another world title. They will face the winner of the second semifinal between England and South Africa, which is set to take place on Thursday at Lord’s.
Mooney pointed out Gardner’s growing confidence, stating, “She has been a key player for us for a long time. Obviously, she had a fantastic innings against India at Lord’s a few days ago, which boosted her confidence. Today, we saw that reflected in her bowling as well. She took crucial wickets, making her a significant threat to other teams. We are fortunate to have her in our squad.”
Australia is just one step away from winning another global title. Mooney stressed the importance of every team member being in good form at this critical stage of the tournament, saying, “Certainly, when the competition reaches its crucial phase, it’s always beneficial for all players to be in good form.”
She also praised Wareham’s contributions, noting that the all-rounder has become one of Australia’s finest players by adapting to various roles, showcasing qualities that make her an impactful player.
Mooney remarked, “Wolf (Wareham) has been phenomenal. Very few cricketers worldwide possess her talent, game understanding, and composure. It took her some time to reach this level, but she has truly made her mark batting at number six and has excelled in bowling as well.”
Mooney believes that Wareham’s all-round capabilities place her among the best in international cricket. The wicketkeeper-batter added, “She is an all-round package—batting, bowling, fielding, a great person, and an outstanding player. She is someone that cricket teams around the world might envy, and she is part of our team. I’m lucky to witness her play from the best seat, whether keeping behind the stumps or watching her bat. Hopefully, she will deliver another stellar performance and help us win on Sunday.”
In the top order, Mooney also credited Georgia Voll for providing a strong start during the powerplay, which helped set the pace for the innings. She stated, “Yes, we have discussed that this part of the game is crucial for aggressive play. Having Georgia Voll in the top order makes it much easier.”
Mooney explained that Australia’s strategy relies on maximizing fielding restrictions and trusting experience to make the right decisions under pressure.
She concluded, “Personally, I have a knack for taking control of the game early. I have played a lot of cricket and have enough data to confirm that I can make the right decisions and know what I’m doing. This won’t always be the case, but I believe that being aggressive during the powerplay and making adjustments as needed is the way to progress in T20 cricket.”
