New Delhi, April 1: The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Tuesday that the second randomization process of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) has been completed for the assembly elections scheduled on April 9 in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry.
According to the commission, this process was conducted through the EVM Management System. Additionally, EVMs for the by-elections in Goa, Karnataka, Nagaland, and Tripura were also randomized for the second time.
The ECI stated that after the first and second randomization, the list of EVMs and VVPATs will be made available to all candidates. This entire process was carried out transparently in the presence of the candidates.
The commission explained that EVMs are allocated randomly in two phases. In the first phase, machines are provided to the assembly constituencies from district-level warehouses, while in the second phase, they are allocated directly to polling stations within the constituencies.
The ECI also mentioned that a second randomization will be conducted under the same process for the assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, as well as for by-elections in other states, following the final date for withdrawal of candidatures.
The elections on April 9 will include assembly elections in two states and one union territory, along with by-elections in four states. A total of 1,955 candidates are contesting, while 250 candidates who filed nominations have withdrawn their names.
In Assam, 722 candidates are contesting for 126 seats. In Kerala, 890 candidates are in the fray for 140 seats, while in Puducherry, 294 candidates are vying for 30 seats.
Regarding the by-elections, there are 3 candidates contesting for one seat in Goa, 34 candidates for two seats in Karnataka, and 6 candidates each for one seat in Nagaland and Tripura.
