EAM Jaishankar Criticizes Opposition for Failure to Pass Womens Reservation Bill

New Delhi, April 18: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has targeted opposition parties for the failure to pass the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ in the Lok Sabha. He stated that the true face of these parties has been revealed to the nation.

Jaishankar accused the opposition of depriving women of their rightful rights by blocking the constitutional amendment that reserves one-third of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

He emphasized that the women of the country and the entire nation are watching this development. He added that the disrespect shown to ‘Nari Shakti’ today will never be forgiven.

It is noteworthy that the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, did not pass in the Lok Sabha due to a lack of the necessary two-thirds majority. In the voting held on Friday, out of 528 members, 298 voted in favor while 230 opposed, falling short by approximately 54 votes.

On Friday, a crucial meeting of the ruling National Democratic Alliance’s floor leaders took place in Parliament. Reports indicate that the NDA’s coalition partners will prominently raise the issue of opposition to women’s empowerment in Parliament.

The government had called a three-day special session to discuss and present the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, the Union Territory Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Delimitation Bill, 2026.

The opposition opposed linking women’s reservation to delimitation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had appealed to support this women’s empowerment bill in the house on Thursday, while Home Minister Amit Shah assured that southern states would not face any loss in their current seat ratios.

However, the opposition remained steadfast in its stance. Rijiju stated that the opposition has missed a historic opportunity to empower women.
