Japan Experiences 5.0 Magnitude Earthquake; PM Urges Citizens to Stay Alert

Tokyo, April 18: A 5.0 magnitude earthquake struck northern Nagano Prefecture at 1:20 PM local time on Saturday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. Reports from Japanese media indicate that the quake registered above 5 on the Shindo seismic intensity scale. Prime Minister Sanae Takaiichi has urged citizens to remain vigilant.

In a post on social media platform X, Prime Minister Takaiichi stated, “The earthquake’s epicenter was located in northern Nagano Prefecture, with strong tremors felt in the city of Omachi, reaching a maximum seismic intensity of 5 on the Japanese scale. Following the quake, the government swiftly established a contact room at the Prime Minister’s Office Crisis Management Center.”

Emphasizing the need for caution, PM Takaiichi added, “I have also instructed assessments of the damage, provided information to the public, and issued directives regarding other matters. I urge residents in areas that experienced strong tremors to remain alert for the possibility of another earthquake of similar intensity.”

According to The Japan Times, the Japan Meteorological Agency confirmed that there is no tsunami threat following the earthquake. The epicenter was located in the northern part of the prefecture, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The upper intensity of the quake was recorded at 5 in Omachi, while Nagano city experienced a lower intensity of 5. The village of Ogawa registered an intensity of 4, and Matsumoto city recorded an intensity of 3. Another aftershock, measuring 3 in intensity, occurred approximately two hours later at 3:30 PM in Omachi.

Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings reported no irregularities at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant in the neighboring Niigata Prefecture. Authorities have warned of the potential for further earthquakes in the area and have advised residents to stay cautious.
