New Delhi, June 1: Archery was initially viewed as a male-dominated sport, with minimal participation from women. However, Indian star Dola Banerjee changed that narrative. She became the first female archer from India to qualify for the Olympics.
Born on June 2, 1980, in Baranagar, West Bengal, Dola developed a keen interest in archery at a young age. She began practicing at just eight years old. Recognizing her passion and determination, her parents enrolled her in the Baranagar Archery Club, where she honed her skills and gradually excelled in the sport.
Dola first showcased her talent on the international stage in 1996 at the Youth World Championship in San Diego, where she impressed everyone at the age of 16.
Her breakthrough came in 2004 when she became the first Indian female archer to qualify for the Athens Olympics. Although her performance there was not outstanding, finishing in 13th place in the individual event, it marked a significant milestone in her career.
The pinnacle of Dola’s achievements occurred in 2007 when she won a gold medal at the Archery World Cup finals held at the Madinat Amphitheater in Dubai. This victory inspired many women to consider archery as a viable career option.
Dola was also part of the Indian team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Her remarkable performance at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, where she won a gold medal in the women’s recurve team event alongside Deepika Kumari and Bombaila Devi, further solidified her legacy. India triumphed over England in the finals.
In recognition of her significant contributions to archery, Dola was honored with the Arjuna Award by the government in 2005.
