Frances Tiafoe Makes Dramatic Comeback to Reach US Open Semifinals

New York, September 9 (Daily Kiran) : Frances Tiafoe of the United States has advanced to the semifinals of the 2026 US Open after a remarkable comeback against fellow American Alex Michelson. Initially trailing by two sets, Tiafoe turned the match around and secured his place in the final four.

The 11th seed faced a tough challenge from Michelson, the world’s 46th-ranked player, who won the first two sets. Tiafoe found himself down 5-3 in the third set, leaving many to wonder if he had lost his momentum in the tournament. However, he rallied impressively, not only winning the third set but ultimately claiming victory in a thrilling five-set match that lasted 4 hours and 38 minutes. The final score was 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (10-6), bolstered by strong support from the crowd.

Michelson, at just 22 years old, was competing in his first quarterfinal and was visibly upset after the loss. Following the match, he was seen in tears, embracing Tiafoe as he processed the defeat.

Tiafoe praised Michelson, stating, “He’s a great player. He could have easily won.” After securing his semifinal spot, Tiafoe expressed optimism about reaching the finals for the first time. Previously, he had reached the semifinals in 2022 and 2024 but fell short against Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz.

Reflecting on the post-match embrace, Michelson remarked, “He’s such a good person, comforting me in that moment. I was trying to hold it together, and I didn’t do a good job. He said a lot of nice personal things. I have plenty of time to move forward, both physically and mentally. I’ll be back here again, I know it.”

Tiafoe’s journey continues as he aims for his first final appearance in the prestigious tournament.
