Washington, June 23: The United States is hosting discussions between Israeli and Lebanese officials in Washington. The primary aim is to seriously implement a ceasefire and to promote a significant effort towards lasting peace and security between the two nations. U.S. officials have termed this initiative as a major undertaking.
The U.S. State Department announced that the talks are being led by Counselor Dan Hollar and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs Dan Zimmermann.
A State Department official stated, “Counselor Hollar, along with ASDW Zimmermann, is initiating the discussions. We will start with a joint military and political session, followed by a military meeting, and finally, a round focused on political issues.”
The official explained that this format includes an initial joint military-political session, followed by a military meeting and a concluding political round. They emphasized, “Our shared goal is to permanently end this cycle of violence. We are assisting Israel and Lebanon in negotiating as two sovereign nations to find a path toward peace and security.”
Furthermore, the official indicated that the talks aim to expedite a major agreement between the two neighbors. Discussions will continue to advance a comprehensive peace and security agreement between the countries, with further updates expected soon.
In addition, a U.S. official noted that Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun prior to the Washington meeting on Friday. This dialogue reflects America’s increased efforts to monitor developments on the ground in Lebanon.
The official confirmed that following discussions with both leaders, the U.S. has initiated a monitoring system through CENTCOM to provide policymakers with real-time and accurate information regarding the conflict in Lebanon.
It was also confirmed that Israeli and Lebanese representatives will remain in Washington for several days as talks continue. These meetings illustrate the U.S.’s renewed diplomatic efforts to prevent large-scale hostilities from resurfacing along the Israel-Lebanon border and to strengthen existing ceasefire arrangements.
