Chennai, June 8: The ruling Tamilaga Vettire Kazhagam (TVK) government and the opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) are facing escalating political tensions in Tamil Nadu. In response, the DMK has announced the launch of a statewide legal assistance network for party workers, supporters, and social media activists.
The DMK claims that individuals criticizing the government are facing action based on “false complaints.” The party alleges that the administration, led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, is using police and legal processes to suppress and intimidate dissenting voices.
Repeatedly, the DMK has accused the government of attempting to limit democratic criticism through arrests, complaints, and investigations against political opponents and social media commentators.
In a statement issued from the party headquarters, the DMK revealed that on May 25, party organizational secretary R.S. Bharti and legal cell secretary and senior advocate N.R. Elango decided to establish a special legal assistance mechanism for those allegedly facing complaints for political reasons.
The statement noted that individuals who criticize the government through democratic and legal means are reportedly being intimidated and subjected to legal harassment. The party believes such actions pose a threat to freedom of expression and democratic rights.
In light of these concerns, the DMK has released a list of lawyers and legal coordinators across several districts to provide legal advice and assistance to affected individuals.
This network will cover major districts, including Chennai, Kanchipuram, Madurai, Dindigul, Tuticorin, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore, and Tiruvannamalai.
The party also stated that legal assistance will be available in cases of alleged baseless accusations, defamation campaigns, and unsubstantiated claims against the DMK or its members.
The statement emphasized, “If democratic views are being suppressed through false complaints, party workers and social media journalists can seek appropriate legal assistance from the listed lawyers.”
In addition to the legal helpline, the DMK has established a special email channel through its legal cell, where individuals can send complaints, documents, and information related to their cases.
The party has urged its workers, supporters, and social media activists to utilize this facility if they believe that legal actions taken against them are politically motivated.
The DMK’s announcement is likely to intensify the ongoing political battle between the DMK and the ruling TVK government regarding issues related to freedom of expression, dissent, and political criticism.
