Devotees Gather for Grand Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain

Ujjain, October 4 (Daily Kiran) : Early on October 4, 2026, the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain hosted a magnificent Bhasma Aarti, marking the ninth day of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Ashwin. The event drew a massive crowd of devotees eager to witness the divine adornment of Baba Mahakal. The temple resonated with chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal” and “Har Har Mahadev.”

Following tradition, the temple gates opened after seeking the blessings of Lord Veerabhadra, accompanied by the sounds of drums, cymbals, and conch shells. As the temple doors swung open in the morning, priests commenced the ritual worship of Baba Mahakal. The first offering was the Haridra water, presented after ringing the ceremonial bell. Subsequently, a sacred bath was performed using Panchamrit, a mixture of milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, and fruit juices.

Once the ritual bath concluded, Baba Mahakal was adorned with exquisite decorations. Priests applied bhang, sandalwood, and vermilion to the deity. The idol was then decorated with fragrant flowers like mogra and roses. Baba Mahakal was adorned with a silver crown, a fig garland, and a bhang necklace, along with fragrant floral wreaths. Offerings of fruits, dried fruits, and sweets were also presented.

Before the Bhasma Aarti commenced, the Mahavir Akhara offered sacred ash to Baba Mahakal. As the ash was applied, the divine and tangible form of Baba Mahakal became visible, filling the courtyard with an atmosphere of devotion. Thousands of devotees were moved to tears, bowing in reverence amidst the sounds of bells, drums, and conch shells.

The Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar Temple holds a unique tradition and profound religious significance. According to custom, only after the offering of ash does Baba Mahakal reveal his form to his devotees. This sacred ritual attracts worshippers from across the country and beyond to Ujjain.
