Left-Wing Parties Leverage Social Media for Tamil Nadu By-Elections

Chennai, October 4 (Daily Kiran) : In Chennai, left-wing parties are intensifying their outreach efforts ahead of the by-elections in Madurantakam and Dharmapuram. Utilizing candidate-focused social media pages, WhatsApp groups, and dedicated channels, the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] are tapping into digital platforms to connect with voters.

Parties participating in the coalition are employing their cadre networks to disseminate campaign information, share candidate perspectives, and highlight local issues raised by voters. Party officials report that activists and supporters are voluntarily sharing this information through WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram. Notably, there is no use of paid promotions or bulk SMS messaging in their campaigns.

The CPI(M) has created over 100 WhatsApp groups specifically for the Madurantakam campaign. Campaign in-charge S. Kannan noted that each group consists of about 30 party members and 300 to 500 voters from the area. These groups serve as a conduit for spreading campaign messages among voters while also helping party workers coordinate activities across different parts of the electoral constituency.

According to the party’s state social media in-charge, Suthir, the CPI(M) has established a dedicated WhatsApp channel and various Facebook and Instagram pages for the by-elections. The social media campaign is branded “Vote for Sugandhi,” placing the Madurantakam candidate at the forefront of the online initiative.

These platforms are being utilized to share the party’s views on public issues and its overall perspective. To integrate their printed promotional materials with the digital campaign, the CPI(M) has included QR codes on pamphlets distributed to voters. Scanning these codes allows individuals to access campaign information and learn about the party’s stance through online platforms.

In Dharmapuram, the CPI has segmented the electoral area into three parts to devise its digital outreach plan. Each section has a dedicated WhatsApp channel named “Dharmapuram Idathu Pakkam,” which translates to “Dharmapuram for the Left.”

Approximately 100 WhatsApp groups have been established in the electoral region, providing the party with an additional network to disseminate messages and coordinate campaign activities. In both electoral areas, the party is effectively merging organizational efforts with digital communication.

Through cadre groups, information is spread, while dedicated channels and social media pages keep voters engaged with the campaign. Both parties are expanding their reach using platforms that voters are already familiar with. During the campaign in Madurantakam and Dharmapuram, supporters are actively sharing their messages across various networks.
