Bhopal, April 5: A severe hailstorm struck Bhind district in Madhya Pradesh on Saturday, wreaking havoc on the local population. The sudden storm, accompanied by heavy rainfall and strong winds, disrupted daily life significantly.
Tragically, two individuals lost their lives, and at least six others were injured, including a female councilor. Thick layers of hail blanketed fields and roads, creating a scene of devastation in rural areas. This abrupt weather change, caused by a western disturbance, brought fierce winds, lightning, and large hailstones to several parts of Madhya Pradesh, including Bhind.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued alerts for thunderstorms, hail, and winds reaching speeds of 60-70 kilometers per hour in districts like Bhind. In the Madi Jetpura village of the Raun police station area, farmer Sanjay Singh Rajawat died on the spot. He had sought shelter under a neem tree during the storm, which ultimately led to his tragic death due to a falling tree or lightning strike. The entire village is in mourning, and the victim’s family is in shock.
In the Mau area, strong winds and heavy rain caused a wall of a house to collapse, resulting in the death of nine-year-old Ragini Yadav, who was trapped under the debris. Approximately six other individuals were injured and have been admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Additionally, in the districts of Seoni and Rewa, four more lives were lost due to lightning strikes. The sudden shift in weather has instilled fear in rural communities. Temperatures have dropped by 2 to 7 degrees Celsius in several locations, providing some relief from the heat, but the weather conditions remain perilous.
In the Mihona area, a large tree fell on a house, causing the wall to collapse. Ward number 2 councilor Pooja Kushwaha was trapped in the rubble and sustained injuries. She was promptly taken to the hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, in Machand village, a neem tree fell onto the road due to strong winds, narrowly missing a motorcyclist returning home from a shop. In another incident, a parked car was severely damaged when a tree fell on it.
The storm also caused damage to infrastructure. A mobile tower dangerously tilted, raising concerns about network disruptions. A power pole fell onto a fruit vendor’s cart.
Heavy rainfall has led to waterlogging on several roads, severely affecting traffic and daily life. The hailstones covered fields like a white blanket, flattening crops that were ready for harvest and ruining grains left in the open.
Farmers in the district have suffered significant economic losses, with months of hard work destroyed in just a few hours. The district administration and local officials have begun assessing the damage. Relief and assistance measures for affected families, especially farmers, are expected to be announced soon.
Farmers have been urged to secure their standing crops and harvested grains. It is anticipated that this weather pattern will continue for the next few days at varying intensities, after which conditions are expected to gradually improve.
