Telangana Government Seeks Return of Five Villages Merged with Andhra Pradesh

Hyderabad, April 6: The Telangana government has urged the central government to pass a bill in Parliament to reclaim five villages that were merged with Andhra Pradesh in 2014.

Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageshwar Rao has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting the introduction of a bill during the current parliamentary session to reintegrate these villages into Telangana.

The state minister, representing Khammam district, emphasized the need to restore these villages near Bhadrachalam for administrative convenience. He also highlighted the issues faced by tribal communities due to the villages being under Andhra Pradesh’s control.

This demand for the bill comes shortly after Parliament passed legislation granting Amaravati the status of Andhra Pradesh’s sole and permanent capital. During debates in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Telangana MPs raised concerns regarding the villages merged into Andhra Pradesh.

In February, Nageshwar Rao met with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu and requested the return of these five villages to Telangana. Following the meeting, the minister stated that Parliament would need to pass a law for the villages to be returned.

He reminded that in 2014, the central government merged seven mandals from Telangana’s Khammam district into Andhra Pradesh to facilitate the construction of the Polavaram project on the Godavari River.

Nageshwar Rao pointed out that access to Telangana from Bhadrachalam requires passing through these five villages in Andhra Pradesh. He suggested that both state assemblies should pass a resolution urging the center to return these villages to Telangana.

The minister claimed that Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu responded positively to this request. Last November, Nageshwar Rao also wrote letters to Amit Shah and Chief Minister Naidu, urging the return of the five villages adjacent to the temple town of Bhadrachalam, citing their significant historical, religious, tribal welfare, and administrative importance.
