Chennai, April 5: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast predicting light to moderate rain with thunderstorms in parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry over the next few days. There is also a possibility of isolated heavy rainfall in hilly areas, including Coimbatore, Nilgiri, Erode, and Theni districts.
According to the weather department, a low-pressure system extending from Marathwada through interior Karnataka to southern Tamil Nadu is causing a shift in weather patterns. Northern regions of the state may experience a gradual increase in temperature by 2-3 degrees Celsius in the coming days, while southern districts are expected to see relatively stable weather with intermittent rain.
In light of this forecast, sudden rain occurred in several districts on Saturday, providing relief from the intense heat. In the hilly area of Kodaikanal, moderate rain lasted for about an hour in regions such as Observatory, Erichilai, Anna Salai, and Munjikkal. However, a large tree fell in the Pulicholai area, temporarily disrupting traffic.
Similarly, widespread rain was recorded in Udhagamandalam (Ooty) at the Botanical Garden, Charing Cross, ATC, and market areas, delighting tourists who were facing unusually hot weather despite the onset of the tourism season.
Significant rainfall was also reported in interior regions. In Dindigul district, areas like Natham, Chanarapatti, Gopalapatti, Anjukulipatti, Thavasimadai, Chinnalapatti, and Adhur experienced continuous rain. In Vellore, where temperatures had recently soared above 37 degrees Celsius, residents found relief from the rain in areas like Sathuvachari, Katpadi, Vallimalai, and Ponnai.
Tourists enjoying boating and other activities in Yercaud were caught off guard by sudden rain. Rain was also recorded in Salem and surrounding areas, including Asthampatti, Ammappettai, and Kondalampatti.
Heavy rainfall was noted in parts of Perambalur district, where strong winds uprooted banana trees in Hachampatti. Rainfall in Kovilpatti and nearby regions led to a drop in temperatures after prolonged heat.
Despite the rain, temperatures remained high across the state. Madurai recorded a temperature of 38 degrees Celsius, while Tiruchirappalli and Thoothukudi reached up to 39 degrees Celsius. Chennai is expected to have partly cloudy skies, with temperatures ranging from 26 to 37 degrees Celsius. No warnings have been issued for fishermen.
