New Delhi, August 26: Defense Minister Rajnath Singh stated that the daughters of India, who once stood at the forefront of the freedom struggle, are now piloting fighter aircraft to protect the nation’s skies. This is not just a tale of transformation; it embodies the strength of a new India.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Martyrs’ Memorial in Goa, Singh highlighted that today, our daughters are taking on leadership roles in the armed forces, participating in space missions, launching startups, and steering the economy in new directions. These achievements reflect the dreams envisioned by our freedom fighters.
He remarked, “Today, India is enhancing its indigenous capabilities across various sectors, from fighter jets to warships, missiles, radars, drones, and advanced defense systems. India is transitioning from being a buyer of weapons to becoming a significant exporter in global defense manufacturing. Our armed forces are adopting cutting-edge technology. The Navy is safeguarding India’s interests from blue waters to strategic maritime security, while the Air Force protects our skies, and all three services are advancing towards unity.”
He emphasized the responsibility of citizens in independent India, particularly for the youth. Our freedom fighters entrusted us with the duty to strengthen national unity, respect constitutional values, and adhere to the law. Singh noted that Goa’s liberation was a restoration of India’s integrity and pride. On December 19, 1961, Goa was finally freed from Portuguese rule, a feat made possible by the sacrifices of those who laid down their lives at places like Patradevi. The valor displayed by our forces in 1961 became a benchmark in military history, not just for India but for the world.
Goa Liberation Day is not merely an occasion to remember past military valor; it serves as a reminder that our armed forces must always remain vigilant, capable, and prepared to defend India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Rajnath Singh expressed pride in stating that the confidence with which our armed forces undertook their responsibilities is now evolving into a tradition of modern, self-reliant forces. Operation Sindhur is a prime example of this. He stated that while our freedom fighters granted us independence, it is our responsibility to honor that freedom. True freedom is not just about expressing oneself; it also involves understanding our responsibilities alongside our liberties.
“As a defense minister, I take great pride in saying that the professionalism, bravery, and discipline with which the Indian Armed Forces successfully executed the Goa Liberation campaign is a significant chapter in Indian military history,” he added.
He concluded by urging that in today’s India, as we debate regionalism, communalism, and casteism, we must remember that above all these narrow-minded ideologies lies a sentiment of national unity. The history of Patradevi teaches us this vital lesson. The people of Goa raised their voices against colonial rule, and the struggle for Goa’s freedom extended beyond its borders, becoming a collective responsibility for all Indians. Many groups from different parts of India marched peacefully to Goa for the satyagraha.
