New Delhi, September 4 (Daily Kiran) : In New Delhi, tensions ran high outside the Parliament Street police station on September 4 as activists gathered to support Nishhu Azad, a victim of an assault that occurred during a protest at Jantar Mantar. Nishhu, her father Sanjay Azad, and several other prominent figures spoke to the media about the threats they have faced since the incident.
Nishhu Azad, a member of the Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP), revealed that for days, supporters of the accused have been verbally attacking her and issuing rape threats. “To be honest, I’ve faced severe harassment. I filed an FIR against them, and I’m hopeful the police will take action,” she stated. The constant barrage of insults and threats has deeply affected her life, making her reluctant to leave home. “I even missed college for two to three weeks due to fear. Now, when I go back, I feel judged, and it’s disheartening. I hope the police will act swiftly so I won’t have to endure this any longer,” she added.
Sanjay Azad expressed confidence in the Delhi police, stating they have agreed to include legal provisions in the FIR that were initially omitted. “They have given us a 72-hour timeframe for the arrest, and we trust in the police and the Constitution,” he said.
Rishabh Ranjan, a lawyer with the Indian Youth Congress, provided an update on the legal proceedings. He explained that discussions with the police led to the inclusion of serious charges, such as attempted murder and provisions under the SC/ST Act. “They assured us they would frame the accused and proceed with prosecution,” he noted.
CJP spokesperson Saurav Das emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “We are confident the Delhi police, regarded as a leading agency in the country, will uphold their commitment. Those who threaten our citizens cannot roam freely.”
The group also expressed concerns over the police’s handling of the case, particularly regarding the accused’s public statements to the media, which they believe undermine the seriousness of the situation. “The accused has been openly confessing his crimes on news channels. Yet, he remains at large. This sends a troubling message to victims,” said Das.
Chandrashekhar Azad, president of the Azad Samaj Party and a Member of Parliament, called for accountability from the police. “If powerful individuals can evade justice, it poses a threat to democracy and the rule of law,” he warned.
As the situation unfolds, the community remains watchful, hoping for swift action from law enforcement to ensure justice for Nishhu Azad and her family.
