Satya Niketan, September 7 (Daily Kiran) : Delhi’s Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, announced decisive actions following the tragic collapse of a building in Satya Niketan. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, resulted in the deaths of at least six individuals, as confirmed by officials at AIIMS.
In a media briefing, Gupta revealed that an FIR has been filed against the building’s owner. She emphasized that any officials found negligent in their duties would face strict repercussions. “There will be no compromise on the safety of Delhi’s residents. Those responsible for negligence will not be spared,” she stated.
The five-story building, which housed a boys’ hostel, was nearly 50 years old. Gupta explained that water accumulation in the basement had weakened the pillars, leading to the collapse. Immediate actions have already been taken, including the evacuation and planned demolition of a neighboring structure.
In collaboration with the municipal corporation, the government is developing a policy to ensure regular structural audits of public accommodations, including PG facilities, nursing homes, and schools. Buildings that cannot be certified as structurally safe will not be permitted to host public activities.
Gupta reassured that students displaced by the incident would not be left without shelter. Arrangements have been made for their accommodation, and the government is in direct contact with the affected families.
On Monday morning, Gupta visited the site to assess safety measures and ongoing rescue operations. In addition to the FIR against the building owner, she ordered rigorous action against responsible officials from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
Meanwhile, Aryabhatta College in South Campus has been closed, with notices posted to inform students that classes are suspended due to the unfortunate incident. The college has also become a temporary shelter for affected students, with staff available to assist during this challenging time.
The collapse occurred in a narrow alley in Satya Niketan, causing significant concern among local residents and authorities. Emergency services reported that 11 injured individuals were transported to the JPNA Trauma Centre, with five brought in already deceased. One patient later succumbed to injuries, while three others are currently receiving treatment.
This incident has raised urgent questions about building safety regulations and the need for stricter enforcement to prevent future tragedies.
