New Delhi, June 6: The Delhi Traffic Police and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) have initiated a joint campaign against illegal parking and encroachments on the streets. Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Vijyanta Arya stated that this initiative is a significant step towards facilitating traffic flow and ensuring pedestrian safety on the sidewalks in the capital.
In an interview with a news agency, Additional CP Vijyanta Arya remarked, “As you can see, we have established parking facilities in many areas. Yet, people often avoid using designated parking due to habit, convenience, or cost-saving reasons, leaving their vehicles parked anywhere on the road. This joint effort by the MCD and Delhi Traffic Police aims to instill discipline among the public and encourage the use of designated parking.”
She noted that information regarding the designated parking areas established by the MCD is available to both the traffic police and the general public. Despite this, issues persist with vehicles being parked at market entry points, service lanes, main roads, and sidewalks. This situation leads to severe traffic jams and hampers the movement of emergency services like ambulances.
The Additional CP mentioned that under this campaign, joint teams from the traffic police and MCD will conduct regular inspections. Illegal encroachments will be removed, and strict action will be taken against offenders. Additionally, awareness campaigns will be organized in collaboration with market associations, resident welfare associations, and local traders to encourage self-discipline among the public.
Vijyanta Arya also highlighted the successful conclusion of a traffic awareness summer camp, which saw participation from around 2,500 students. The camp aimed to educate the younger generation about traffic rules, discipline, and road safety.
She urged Delhi residents to utilize designated parking spaces. Despite the availability of multi-level parking and other facilities, parking on the streets has become a significant issue for traffic management. This joint campaign is viewed as a crucial effort to make Delhi congestion-free and pedestrian-friendly. The traffic police emphasized that the campaign will be strictly enforced, with regular feedback to enhance its effectiveness.
