Delhi Government Takes Strong Action Against Illegal Construction, Imposes Up to 2 Years Jail for Violators

New Delhi, June 6: In response to recent tragedies caused by illegal construction, negligence of fire safety standards, and administrative lapses, the Delhi government has adopted a stringent approach. Following a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Home Minister Ashish Sood announced several significant administrative decisions. He stated that the government is taking unprecedented steps to establish the rule of law, curb corruption, and ensure accountability.

Addressing the press, Ashish Sood emphasized that the Chief Minister has taken recent incidents very seriously. The government stands firmly with the victims and grieving families, pledging to provide all possible assistance. He noted that the administrative framework is being strengthened to prevent the recurrence of accidents due to serious violations of regulations and illegal constructions.

The minister explained that the previous separate operations by various agencies had led to difficulties in implementing corrective and structural measures. In light of this, the government has decided to bring all relevant units under a coordinated system. Additionally, the powers of District Magistrates (DMs) will be enhanced to ensure effective local monitoring and prompt action.

Ashish Sood announced that the Delhi government has decided to strictly enforce the provisions of the Disaster Management Act of 2005. Legal action will be taken against those who violate government orders and safety standards. He clarified that homeowners and operators of commercial establishments who disregard regulations could face imprisonment for up to two years.

He also mentioned that if any officer’s collusion or negligence is found, strict disciplinary and legal action will be taken against them. Such cases may involve both imprisonment and financial penalties.

The Delhi government believes that these tough measures will curb illegal construction, ensure compliance with safety standards, and strengthen administrative accountability. The government has made it clear that violations of regulations at any level will not be tolerated in the capital.
