Delhi HC Orders MCD Survey to Remove Encroachments Near Jama Masjid

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to conduct a comprehensive survey of the area surrounding the historic Jama Masjid to identify and remove illegal encroachments and unauthorized parking.

The court has given the MCD a two-month deadline to complete the survey and submit a detailed report. It mandated immediate legal action against any unlawful constructions or encroachments found during the inspection.

The matter arose during the hearing of a petition filed by Farhat Hasan and others, who raised concerns about rampant illegal parking outside gates three, five, and seven of Jama Masjid. The petition highlighted that this unauthorized parking causes significant inconvenience to the public. It also pointed out the presence of unauthorized street vendors and commercial shops on public pathways within the mosque’s vicinity.

The petitioners requested prompt removal of illegal parking and hawkers, along with a ban on commercial activities inside the mosque premises. Considering these submissions, the High Court instructed the MCD to survey all public spaces, including MCD parks near Jama Masjid, and act swiftly against violations.

This directive aims to ease traffic congestion and improve pedestrian movement in the busy Old Delhi area, enhancing the overall sanctity and accessibility of one of Delhi’s most prominent religious and historical landmarks.

Jama Masjid attracts thousands of visitors daily for prayers and sightseeing, but the growing problem of illegal parking and unauthorized vending has led to frequent traffic jams and diminished the dignity of the site, as noted by the petitioners.

The High Court’s order reinforces the need for maintaining public order and preserving the heritage environment around Jama Masjid, promising relief for visitors and locals alike.
