India-South Korea Discuss Key Indo-Pacific and Global Issues

Seoul, June 24: Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with South Korea’s National Security Director, V. Sung-lak, on Wednesday. During their meeting, they exchanged strategic assessments on global events and issues related to the Indo-Pacific region.

Jaishankar expressed his satisfaction on social media platform ‘X’, stating, “It was a pleasure to meet with South Korea’s National Security Director V. Sung-lak on Wednesday evening. We had a fruitful discussion on global events and the Indo-Pacific region.”

Earlier that day, Jaishankar also met with his South Korean counterpart, Cho Hyun, in Seoul. The two leaders reviewed cooperation in various sectors, including shipbuilding, trade, investment, defense, technology, clean energy, culture, and people-to-people exchanges.

Following their discussions, Jaishankar noted on ‘X’, “I was pleased to meet with South Korea’s Foreign Minister Cho Hyun in Seoul on Wednesday. Our discussion progressed from the outcomes of President Lee Jae-myung’s recent visit to India. We reviewed cooperation in areas such as politics, shipbuilding, trade, investment, defense, technology, clean energy, culture, and people-to-people contact. We also explored opportunities in startups, fintech, and multilateral platforms while sharing insights on current events in our respective regions and around the world.”

Cho Hyun highlighted that President Lee Jae-myung’s state visit to India last April marked a strong beginning for elevating bilateral relations. He mentioned that both sides reviewed the rapid progress made in trade, investment, and finance under the agreements reached during that summit and discussed ways to further strengthen these ties.

On social media, Cho Hyun announced, “This week, the Indian Prime Minister‘s Office is hosting ‘Korea Week’. This is a step towards fulfilling Prime Minister Modi‘s promise made during the summit to address the issues faced by our companies operating in India. I expressed gratitude for India’s cooperation and mentioned that we will soon hold a similar meeting for Indian companies investing in South Korea.”

He added, “During lunch, Minister Jaishankar and I discussed the rapidly changing global landscape in detail. Both countries agreed to maintain communication to address the economic impacts arising from changes in the Middle East situation. Minister Jaishankar and I will meet again on Thursday at the Jeju Forum. I hope our discussions on bilateral relations and international conditions will again prove beneficial.”

Jaishankar arrived in South Korea after completing a two-day visit to Mongolia. During his time in South Korea, he is scheduled to deliver a keynote speech at the ‘Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity’ on Thursday.
