Deepika Kumari: Indias Only Archer to Compete in Four Olympics

New Delhi, June 13: Deepika Kumari is recognized as one of India’s most successful archers. She has brought glory to the nation in the field of archery on a global scale. Deepika aims to win a medal for her country in the upcoming Olympics.

Born on June 13, 1994, in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, Deepika grew up in a modest family. Her childhood was marked by financial struggles, as her father drove an auto-rickshaw, making it difficult to afford expensive archery equipment. As a child, she practiced with makeshift bows and arrows made from bamboo.

Her inspiration came from her cousin, Vidya Kumari, who was training at the Tata Archery Academy. Watching her cousin sparked Deepika’s desire to become an archer. Eventually, she gained admission to the Tata Archery Academy, where she received better training.

In 2009, Deepika made her mark internationally by winning both the Cadet World Championship and the Youth World Championship. In 2012, she achieved the honor of becoming the world’s number one female recurve archer by winning a gold medal at the World Cup stage held in Turkey.

Her significant achievements include two gold medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, a bronze medal at the Asian Games, a silver medal at the World Championships, and several World Cup medals.

Deepika is the only Indian archer to have participated in four Olympics. Although she has yet to win an Olympic medal, she has showcased her potential by reaching the quarterfinals.

For her outstanding performance in archery, she was awarded the Arjuna Award in 2012 and the Padma Shri in 2016.

In 2020, Deepika married fellow archer Atanu Das. In 2022, she became a mother, giving birth to a daughter named Vedika.

Deepika remains active in archery and is working hard with the goal of winning a medal at the 2028 Olympics.
