Evian, June 16: During the G7 Summit held in Evian, France, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted the importance of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz amid the current Middle East situation.
In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, von der Leyen stated, “At the G7 Summit in Evian, we first need to ensure that freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is fully restored and that there are no restrictions.”
She also pointed out that recent incidents in the Strait have exposed vulnerabilities that require our attention. “We must work together on alternative supply routes and new corridors, such as IMEC. Through better connectivity, we can turn these vulnerabilities into opportunities. A stable and peaceful Lebanon is also essential for a stable and peaceful Middle East,” she added.
At the G7 Summit, U.S. President Donald Trump pressured Russia to reach a ceasefire agreement. He remarked, “What is happening there is madness. We had a meeting, and I spoke with President Putin on Sunday. They just keep fighting and losing soldiers. I have resolved eight wars. I thought this would be the easiest to solve.” Trump noted the significant tensions between the two leaders, urging, “Russia should come to an agreement.”
In another post on ‘X’, President von der Leyen welcomed the positive vote in the European Parliament regarding the EU-U.S. trade agreement. She stated, “With this important step, we are just days away from fulfilling our promise to eliminate tariffs on imports of U.S. industrial goods. Once both parties fully implement this agreement, it will provide even more benefits to citizens and businesses. Additionally, it will help maintain strong and stable trade and investment across the Atlantic.”
