New Delhi, May 28: CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat has responded to the recent incident in Thiruvananthapuram, where protesters allegedly attacked a vehicle belonging to an Enforcement Directorate (ED) official outside Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s residence.
Speaking to reporters, Karat stated that the ED’s raids on the homes and offices of Vijayan are widely perceived as politically motivated actions. She emphasized that the intention behind these raids was to intimidate and humiliate a prominent opposition leader.
Karat noted that the raids have sparked protests not only across Kerala but also in other parts of the country. She pointed out that leaders from various parties, including the CPI(M), have condemned the actions as a clear political assault.
“When an incident occurs involving a respected leader with significant public support, protests are inevitable,” she explained. The protests, she asserted, were spontaneous and not orchestrated. However, she criticized the ED for attempting to portray the situation as a premeditated attack on their teams, which she firmly denied.
Karat argued that if it were a planned assault, ED teams would have faced similar incidents throughout Kerala. This clearly indicates that the protests were a natural expression of dissent from the youth, she added.
She dismissed the ED’s claims as misleading, stating that similar statements from Congress leaders in Kerala also reflect a misunderstanding of the situation. Karat concluded by asserting that the ED is collaborating with the BJP to undermine the CPI(M) leadership through certain Congress leaders in Kerala. She expressed confidence that these tactics would not succeed, highlighting that the CPI(M) has faced numerous challenges and will not yield to such maneuvers.
