CPI Urges Tamil Nadu Governor to Allow TVK to Prove Majority in Assembly

Chennai, May 7: The Tamil Nadu state executive committee of the Communist Party of India (CPI) has urged the state’s governor to grant the largest party, Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), the opportunity to prove its majority in the assembly.

In an official statement released on Thursday, the CPI emphasized that “the governor should act according to the Constitution.” The recent assembly elections held on April 23 did not yield a clear mandate, preventing any single party from forming a government independently. However, the electorate has chosen TVK as the largest single party, securing 108 seats. Based on this, TVK leader Vijay met with the governor to claim the formation of the government. The governor’s insistence that TVK prove its majority before the swearing-in ceremony is deemed inappropriate.

The CPI’s statement further asserted, “As the largest single party, the governor must provide TVK the time to demonstrate its majority in the assembly, in accordance with the Constitution. The Supreme Court has confirmed this principle in several rulings, including the SR Bommai case.”

Considering all factors, the CPI’s Tamil Nadu state executive committee appeals to the governor to allow TVK the opportunity to prove its majority in the assembly, thereby respecting the spirit of the Constitution and the decisions of the Supreme Court.

It is noteworthy that TVK emerged as the largest party in the 234-member state assembly with 108 seats. However, it fell short of the 118 seats required for a majority. Consequently, the party needs support from legislators of other parties to form a government.

On Wednesday evening, Vijay met with Tamil Nadu Governor R.V. Arlekar at the Raj Bhavan in Chennai to formally present his claim to form the next government. During this meeting, Vijay reportedly submitted a list of 113 supporting legislators, which included 108 from TVK and five Congress members who pledged their support to the party.

However, sources indicated that Governor Arlekar informed Vijay that he would need the backing of at least 118 legislators before being invited to form the government. This requirement is causing delays in the establishment of a new government in Tamil Nadu.
