Kolkata, May 29: The development of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport is facing delays due to a mosque located near the secondary runway. BJP legislator Sourav Sikdar has voiced concerns over the mosque’s presence, stating that discussions are ongoing regarding its removal. He emphasized that the mosque is obstructing runway expansion and poses safety risks.
Sikdar mentioned that a joint meeting was convened at the District Magistrate’s office, which included members of the mosque committee. They were requested to consider relocating the mosque, as the land belongs to the Airport Authority of India.
He asserted that removing the mosque is essential for the runway’s expansion and the overall development of the airport. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has prioritized the airport’s growth, recognizing it as the largest airport in Eastern India.
Sikdar pointed out that the mosque’s presence is hindering expansion efforts, limiting the increase in flight operations. He has appealed to all Muslim leaders, stating that religion should never obstruct progress.
Minister Dilip Ghosh also commented on the mosque’s situation at Kolkata Airport, noting that many religious sites exist in Bengal, including temples and mosques. He stressed that places of worship should be respected but not used to occupy land unlawfully.
Ghosh questioned how the mosque was constructed in the first place, suggesting that if it was built illegally, it must be removed. He also called on those who have constructed illegal shops and homes to vacate the area.
