Washington, June 20: President Donald Trump has unveiled the new VC-25B Bridge Aircraft for the U.S. Air Force. He described it as a symbol of American strength and a long-awaited replacement for the aging presidential fleet.
After inspecting the aircraft and addressing military personnel at Joint Base Andrews, Trump spoke to reporters, stating that the modified Boeing 747 will serve as an interim presidential aircraft until the next-generation Air Force One program is completed.
“The second aircraft was nearly 35 years old, and it was time for a change,” Trump remarked. He noted that the existing aircraft has served multiple presidents. The new aircraft is nearly double the size and reflects America’s global identity.
The VC-25B Bridge aircraft has arrived this week in the Presidential Airlift Group and has begun a series of commissioning flights. These flights are designed to confirm mission capabilities and complete necessary final protocols before the aircraft is formally included in the presidential airlift fleet.
Air Force Secretary Troy Meink announced the arrival of the aircraft, stating, “The safety of the Commander in Chief is our top priority.” General Kenneth Wilsbach, the 24th Chief of Staff of the Air Force, emphasized that this program demonstrates the service’s ability to provide a secure, reliable airborne command post quickly.
Trump praised the military personnel and contractors who completed the aircraft in about ten months. “Thanks to the tremendous dedication of many of you here today, this plane has been transformed into a flying White House, featuring luxury never seen before,” he said.
He also thanked the Emir of Qatar for providing the aircraft while Washington awaited a swift resolution to the long-delayed Boeing VC-25B program delivery. “We were in a bit of a bind. We were waiting for the standard 747, and we would like to use it for some time because the current planes are quite old,” Trump added.
According to Air Force officials, significant upgrades focusing on security and mission communication have been made to the Bridge Aircraft. It is equipped with advanced secure communication systems and has been modified under a disciplined engineering process to meet presidential travel needs.
During the event, reporters were given a brief tour, showcasing tan leather seating, conference facilities, extensive wood paneling, and various communication systems within the spacious interior. Air Force officials informed the media that the aircraft features lay-flat seating and enhanced operational capabilities.
Trump highlighted the aircraft’s range and communication equipment, noting that it includes the highest level of communication technology with four or five different sets for double and triple communication.
He also mentioned that a significant military flyover is expected next year to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary and the Fourth of July.
Referring to the current presidential aircraft fleet, Trump stated, “My last planned trip was on the VC-25A after returning from the G7 summit.” He suggested that the older aircraft could be preserved in a museum due to their historical significance.
The current VC-25A aircraft entered service during former President George H.W. Bush’s administration and has been operational for every U.S. president since. This aircraft is one of the most recognized symbols of the American presidency and serves as an airborne command center capable of supporting the Commander in Chief during challenging times.
