Colombo, September 8 (Daily Kiran) : Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has commenced a three-day official visit to Sri Lanka, departing from New Delhi on September 8. His trip will last until September 10, during which he plans to engage in discussions with Sri Lanka’s top leadership on various bilateral and regional issues. Singh is also scheduled to meet with members of the Indian community residing in Colombo.
Expressing enthusiasm about his visit, Singh stated that he looks forward to meaningful and productive conversations with Sri Lankan leaders. He emphasized the long-standing partnership and deep-rooted historical and civilizational ties between India and Sri Lanka. Singh identified Sri Lanka as one of India’s key partners under its “Neighborhood First” policy and the Indian Ocean initiative.
According to the Ministry of Defense, this visit aims to further strengthen the traditionally robust and friendly relations between the two nations, with a particular focus on enhancing defense cooperation and maritime partnerships. Key areas of collaboration include military training, capacity building, professional exchanges, and maritime security. Given the strategic positioning of both countries in the Indian Ocean, maritime security cooperation holds special significance.
India and Sri Lanka share centuries-old civilizational ties, fostering a wide-ranging partnership across areas such as regional security, defense, economy, trade, and people-to-people connections. Singh’s visit comes at a time when the importance of maritime security in the Indian Ocean region is growing. Thus, maritime security and defense collaboration are expected to be focal points of the discussions.
Accompanying Singh is a high-level delegation, including senior officials from the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of External Affairs. The Ministry of Defense noted that this visit will aid in reinforcing the traditionally strong and friendly relations between India and Sri Lanka. The talks will focus on areas that promise mutual benefits for both countries, particularly in strengthening maritime and defense partnerships, which are crucial for strategic cooperation in the region.
