Mumbai, June 12: The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARDA) at King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital in Mumbai has issued an official statement regarding a recent controversy involving an MBBS student. The organization clarified that the student in question is not a member of KEM MARDA, as it exclusively represents resident doctors and postgraduate trainees.
In the press release, KEM MARDA expressed the necessity of voicing concerns as members of the medical community. The organization emphasized its commitment to the highest standards of professional conduct, ethical values, and respect for those who donate their bodies. The statement condemned the student’s comments as inappropriate, inconsistent with the expected values of medical professionals, and likely to hurt public sentiments.
However, the organization also noted that the student publicly expressed regret and apologized for the remarks. KEM MARDA clarified that while it does not support the student’s comments, it does not condone the ongoing personal attacks, online harassment, and targeted bullying against the individual.
The organization stated that public discussions should be fair, responsible, and limited to the incident itself. It specifically mentioned that linking this controversy to unrelated issues, such as the student’s admission through a reservation quota, is misguided. KEM MARDA supports accountability, self-reflection, and a learning process within the medical community, but insists that discussions must remain respectful, balanced, and humane.
The controversy arose from comments made by the MBBS student during a comedy show. The student has faced trolling on social media, with calls for action against them. Critics argue that the remarks made by the student, which pertained to human corpses and body donors, were insensitive. Following the viral spread of the video, many doctors, medical students, and members of the public have condemned the comments as disrespectful to body donors.
