Beijing, August 29: Ahead of the 2026 Bishkek Summit, a special interview was conducted with Nurlan Yermekbayev, Secretary-General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), by reporters from China Media Group (CMG). He shared insights on the achievements of the SCO’s 25th anniversary, future economic and security collaborations, and initiatives related to global governance.
Yermekbayev highlighted that over the past 25 years, the SCO has successfully fostered an environment of mutual trust and established a framework for dialogue. This has enabled member countries with diverse political systems and cultures to reach consensus on complex issues. Currently, the organization has established cooperation mechanisms in 29 specific areas and is promoting concrete collaboration through meetings at various levels.
He emphasized that the SCO does not discriminate based on the size or economic strength of member states, adhering instead to the principle of consensus. This is the organization’s greatest strength. Referring to the upcoming Bishkek Summit, he expressed hope that several practical documents would be adopted, further strengthening cooperation among SCO member countries for lasting peace and prosperity.
In the realms of economics and emerging technologies, Yermekbayev noted that a political decision was made at last year’s SCO summit in Tianjin to establish the SCO Development Bank for financing multilateral projects, with a particular focus on infrastructure connectivity.
He also mentioned that the digital economy, artificial intelligence, and green development are currently the organization’s top priorities. The SCO has adopted relevant frameworks for cooperation in these areas. Additionally, the China-SCO Energy Cooperation Center and the Artificial Intelligence Application Center have been established to promote renewable energy and high-tech projects.
Notably, he pointed out that trade among SCO member countries has exceeded $700 billion since 2026, but there is still significant potential to leverage multilateral projects further.
In the interview, Secretary-General Yermekbayev praised Chinese President Xi Jinping’s “Global Governance Initiative,” stating that it aligns with the “Shanghai Spirit.” This initiative emphasizes equality, people-centered development, respect for cultural diversity, and shared growth.
He noted that the proposal for this initiative was timely, presented at last year’s Tianjin summit. SCO member countries have also expressed their support and readiness to collaborate with BRICS and other mechanisms, aiming to promote a more just and inclusive international order.
