Beijing, August 29: The 24th session of the 14th National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee concluded on Friday afternoon at the Great Hall of the People in China’s capital, Beijing. The session was chaired by Zhao Lechi, the Chairman of the NPC Standing Committee.
After the voting was completed, Zhao Lechi addressed the assembly, stating that ten bills were reviewed during this session, of which five were passed.
Among the approved bills is a new medical insurance law aimed at implementing a health priority development strategy. Additionally, the Agricultural Land Conservation and Quality Improvement Law was also approved, which is crucial for ensuring food security. The session also passed amendments to the agricultural law, the revised National Defense Mobilization Law, and changes to the Lawyer Law.
During this occasion, Zhao Lechi announced that the Environmental Code has been in effect since August 15. With its implementation, a new area of environmental law has been added to China’s legal system, increasing the number of major legal domains to eight.
He emphasized that the implementation of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) has introduced new requirements for legislative work. This includes a focus on law-making in key, emerging, and foreign sectors, improving the quality of laws, promoting a democratic and open legislative process, and strengthening constitutional review.
