Dhamtari, August 29: In a significant ruling, a court in Dhamtari, Chhattisgarh, sentenced the accused in the high-profile Birendra Devangan murder case to life imprisonment. The court found Khushwant alias Khuubu Sahu guilty of murder in connection with the discovery of a body between Manav Van and Shiva Resort.
On August 27, the Additional Sessions Judge and Second Additional Judge of Dhamtari convicted the accused under Section 103(1) of the Indian Penal Code, 2023, imposing a life sentence and a fine of ₹500. If the fine is not paid, the accused will face an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment.
According to police reports, Birendra Devangan, 55, from Padmapur, was reported missing on December 3, 2024, at the Sihawa police station. On the same day, a motorcycle was found abandoned near Manav Van, which was later identified as belonging to Devangan.
While the search for the missing person continued, a body was discovered on December 6, 2024, between Manav Van and Shiva Resort. The deceased was later identified as Birendra Devangan. Following a post-mortem and the emergence of evidence suggesting foul play, police initiated a thorough investigation.
The Rudri police and cyber team examined technical evidence, CCTV footage, and other circumstantial evidence during their investigation. This led to the identification of Khushwant alias Khuubu Sahu, 37, as the prime suspect.
Police stated that due to a previous grudge, the accused attacked his friend Birendra Devangan with a helmet, resulting in his death. Based on the interrogation and evidence, a case was registered against the accused, and charges were filed in court.
During the hearing of Sessions Case No. 20/2025 and Rudri Police Station Crime No. 76/2024, the court deemed the CCTV footage, circumstantial evidence, and witness statements crucial in convicting the accused.
The convicted individual, Khushwant alias Khuubu Sahu, resides near Gaura Chowk, Karma Temple, Dhanora, in Durg district.
Dhamtari police hailed the conviction as a significant success, attributing it to the solid investigation and technical evidence. The then Rudri police station in-charge, Sub-Inspector Amit Baghel, along with Sub-Inspector Lakshmikant Shukla and Assistant Sub-Inspector Ghanshyam Verma, were recognized by Superintendent of Police Dhamtari, Bhavna Pandey, for their exemplary work.
Authorities emphasized that modern investigative techniques, including CCTV analysis and scientific evidence collection, played a crucial role in securing justice in this serious murder case.
