Controversy Erupts Over Malalas Book in Ahmedabad Schools

New Delhi, August 28: A significant controversy has emerged in Ahmedabad regarding the inclusion of Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai’s book in school curricula. Swami Darshan Bharti, founder and head of the Devbhoomi Raksha Abhiyan, has publicly condemned this decision, stating that “there is no place for Malala in India.”

Swami Bharti labeled Yousafzai as “anti-religious” and criticized the effort to introduce her book to students. He expressed concern that presenting a Pakistani figure through literature is inappropriate. He questioned why Malala’s background should be included in Indian education, suggesting that her representation should be confined to her own country.

He further stated, “I do not oppose the girl named Malala, but I firmly believe that her name should not appear in our country’s textbooks, as it could be detrimental to future generations.” He emphasized that his organization is working towards a “Sanatan and Hindu nation,” asserting that Malala has no place in India based on their religious beliefs. He urged the youth, saying, “The Hindu nation is waiting for you.”

Shadab Shams, chairman of the Uttarakhand Waqf Board, also commented on the issue, noting the mixed reactions to the controversy surrounding Malala’s book. He remarked, “We will stand against anything that is anti-India. However, it is coincidental that the Congress party seems to support whatever is anti-India.”

Shams highlighted that figures like Mahatma Gandhi, B.R. Ambedkar, and Bhagat Singh are taught in Indian schools, and he questioned why Malala Yousafzai should be treated differently. He affirmed that any book would be evaluated against the standards of the Constitution and nationalism.

Additionally, Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahli, chairman of the Islamic Center of India, expressed his disappointment over the controversy. He stated, “The dispute regarding Malala’s book in Ahmedabad is quite unfortunate.” He acknowledged Malala’s recognition by the United Nations and emphasized that the decision on which books to teach should primarily rest with school administrations. He cautioned against allowing external organizations to interfere in educational matters.
