Oman, September 23 (Daily Kiran) : A tragic incident occurred off the eastern coast of Oman when the commercial vessel MV Cape Dao was attacked, resulting in the death of one Indian sailor. Thankfully, 19 other Indian crew members were rescued. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs condemned the attack on Wednesday.
In an official statement, the ministry expressed its sorrow, stating, “We condemn the attack on the MV Cape Dao near Oman’s eastern coast. Of the 20 Indian sailors aboard, 19 have been rescued, while sadly, one Indian national has lost his life.” The ministry extended its heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased.
The ministry further informed that the Indian Embassy in Oman is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with local authorities to ensure the safe return of the Indian sailors. It also expressed gratitude to Omani officials for their assistance in the rescue efforts.
Concerns over the ongoing attacks on commercial vessels in the region were highlighted in the statement. The ministry reiterated its call for dialogue and diplomacy to reduce tensions and restore peace in the area. It emphasized that attacks on commercial ships, sailors, and civilian infrastructure must cease, and that the free movement of trade along international maritime routes should be reinstated promptly.
According to the Indian Embassy in Muscat, the MV Cape Dao was en route to India when the attack occurred. The embassy is in contact with Omani authorities regarding the safety of the crew.
In a post on social media platform X, the embassy expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the Indian sailor and extended condolences to the grieving family.
The embassy also mentioned that it is coordinating with RPSL and is in touch with the family of the deceased sailor.
This incident follows another attack on September 13, when the commercial vessel MT El Gaya was targeted off the coast of Oman. That attack involved 14 Indian nationals, with 13 being rescued and one sailor reported missing.
At that time, spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal from the Ministry of External Affairs expressed gratitude to Omani officials for their efforts in rescuing the 13 Indian sailors and noted that a search and rescue operation was ongoing for the missing sailor with the help of Omani authorities.
