Bhubaneswar, March 17: The Congress party has taken decisive action regarding cross voting in the Rajya Sabha elections. The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) has suspended three of its legislators for alleged anti-party activities. The suspended members include Ramesh Jena, Dasarathi Gamango, and Sofia Firdaus.
According to a press release from the OPCC, the three legislators were found guilty of violating the party whip by voting in favor of a candidate supported by the BJP, which goes against the party’s ideology.
The Congress stated that such actions not only breach party discipline but also harm the party’s interests. Taking serious note of this misconduct, the OPCC decided to suspend the legislators with immediate effect. Sujit Padhi, the chairperson of the party’s disciplinary action committee, announced the suspensions in a press statement on Tuesday.
During the Rajya Sabha elections, opposition legislators engaged in cross voting, enabling the NDA to secure two seats in Odisha. This election was considered highly competitive, but cross voting ultimately benefited the NDA. A total of 11 legislators, including eight from BJD and three from Congress, participated in cross voting, leading to the victory of Dilip Ray.
A similar situation unfolded in Bihar, where the BJP won all five seats. While four seats were expected to go to the BJP, the fifth seat was seen as a challenge. However, due to cross voting, the BJP managed to secure that seat as well.
BJP National President Nitin Naveen expressed satisfaction over the NDA’s impressive performance in the Rajya Sabha elections. He congratulated the victorious NDA candidates, stating that the people of Bihar are ready to move forward under NDA leadership.
