Kolkata, June 5: Amid the ongoing political upheaval in West Bengal, senior Congress leader and five-time Lok Sabha MP, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, has made significant remarks. He stated that the fragmentation of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), seen as the primary opposition force in the state, has created a vacuum in opposition politics. This situation presents a substantial opportunity for Congress to strengthen its organization and grassroots support.
In an interview, Chowdhury sharply reacted to the emergence of new factions within the TMC’s legislative party and the appointment of expelled MLA Ritabrata Banerjee as the new opposition leader. He described the entire scenario as a “circus.”
Chowdhury remarked, “What more can I say? There is a circus going on there. What else can these events be called?” He subtly targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) without naming it directly, suggesting that the party currently in power is the true “magician” behind this circus.
When asked if the TMC’s disintegration and the resulting political crisis would benefit Congress, he answered affirmatively. Chowdhury emphasized that Congress is ready to advance its political agenda and organization everywhere. The current situation in West Bengal presents Congress with a chance to solidify its position.
He stated, “The TMC has already lost power in West Bengal, and now, with the kind of disorder visible, Congress has an opportunity to strengthen its foothold. During the previous tenure, we were neither allowed to conduct organizational activities freely nor given a chance to contest elections democratically.”
In the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections, Congress secured victory in two seats. This time, the party contested independently, breaking away from the seat-sharing agreement with the CPI(M)-led Left Front that had been in place since 2016.
