Ranchi, March 23: The Congress party has expressed concern over the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha’s (JMM) decision to contest independently in 21 seats during the Assam Assembly elections. Keshav Mahato Kamlesh, president of the Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee, warned that this move could lead to a fragmentation of tribal votes, potentially undermining their collective strength.
In a statement, the state Congress president noted that the party had made serious efforts to form an alliance with JMM for the Assam elections, proposing to share 5 to 7 seats. Furthermore, Congress assured full organizational support for the seats contested by JMM. The intention was to facilitate JMM representatives’ access to the Assam Assembly. However, JMM opted to run independently based on support from local parties after failing to reach an agreement on seat-sharing. On Monday, JMM released a list of 21 candidates for the Assam Assembly elections.
According to a list issued by the party’s central general secretary, Vinod Kumar Pandey, all candidates have already filed their nominations. JMM’s activity in Assam has recently increased, with the party now having its traditional ‘bow and arrow’ election symbol, which it views as a strategic advantage. The party’s electoral strategy focuses particularly on the tea garden areas, targeting the T-tribe and tribal vote bank.
Party leadership believes that the tribal communities from Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal settled in Assam have not received the political representation they deserve. Based on this premise, JMM is working to strengthen its political foothold in the region. The large crowds at recent public meetings held by Chief Minister Hemant Soren are also seen by the party as a positive sign in their favor.
