Murshidabad, August 8: Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has accused the government of using women’s reservation as a pretext for political maneuvering. He stated that the government is attempting to entice and divide opposition parties to secure the two-thirds majority needed to pass the bill.
In a conversation with reporters on Saturday, Chowdhury remarked that Union Minister Kiren Rijiju is aware that merely mentioning issues like women’s empowerment is a superficial tactic. If the government genuinely cared about empowering women, they would take concrete steps to reserve 33% of seats for women in the Lok Sabha. Such action would undoubtedly yield positive results for women’s empowerment on the ground.
Chowdhury questioned why the central government has not taken steps to ensure 33% reservation for women. Observing their current stance, it appears they are only referencing women’s reservation for political gain. Minister Rijiju knows well that passing legislation related to women’s reservation is not straightforward. There are numerous obstacles in this path. Keeping this in mind, the government seems to be attempting to mislead members of other political parties, trying to confuse and entice them. By doing so, they aim to manipulate the entire political situation in their favor. However, they are unlikely to achieve the desired outcome.
He emphasized that the government needs numbers in Parliament. Currently, they do not possess a two-thirds majority. In light of this, they are making every effort to mislead members of other political parties. Chowdhury advised that making baseless comments about Rahul Gandhi would not be beneficial. It would be wiser for them to focus on their work.
