Earthquake Shakes Uttarakhand, Felt in Delhi-NCR

Dehradun, October 6 (Daily Kiran) : A strong earthquake rattled Uttarakhand on the night of October 6, sending residents into a state of panic. The tremors were most intense in Chamoli district, where the earthquake registered a magnitude of 4.9 on the Richter scale. The shaking was felt across several areas, including Pauri Garhwal, Udham Singh Nagar, Haridwar, and Nainital.

According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake struck at precisely 10:23 PM. Its epicenter was located approximately 50 kilometers south of Joshimath, with coordinates of latitude 30.103 and longitude 79.561. The quake originated at a depth of 13 kilometers beneath the earth’s surface.

In Pauri Garhwal, residents reported experiencing the tremors at 10:26 PM, with an estimated intensity of 4.4. People in mountainous regions, including Kotdwar, felt the shaking and quickly evacuated their homes, remaining outdoors for safety.

Udham Singh Nagar also experienced tremors at 10:24 PM, while Nainital in the Kumaon region felt the earthquake at 10:23 PM. Residents of Haridwar reported similar sensations. Reports of the earthquake continued to come in from various districts.

So far, there have been no reports of damage or injuries. Local authorities have requested damage assessments from all tehsils. The disaster management department has urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading rumors, emphasizing the importance of following safety protocols during such events.

Uttarakhand is classified as a Zone 4 and Zone 5 region in terms of seismic activity, indicating high vulnerability to earthquakes. The Chamoli and Joshimath areas are particularly sensitive to landslides. There have been several minor tremors in this region in recent months.

Experts indicate that this earthquake, occurring at a depth of 13 kilometers, is considered moderate, which is why its effects were felt over a wide area. Currently, the situation is reported to be stable. Residents in Delhi-NCR also felt the tremors around 10:25 PM and evacuated their homes as a precaution.
