Jaunpur, August 8: As Independence Day approaches, preparations for the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign are gaining momentum across the country. In this initiative, rural women associated with self-help groups (SHGs) in Jaunpur district, Uttar Pradesh, are playing a crucial role in crafting the national flag.
This year, the campaign aims to produce a total of 500,000 flags. Approximately 300 women from 62 active self-help groups in various regions of the district have been entrusted with this responsibility. The flags created will be distributed across all blocks in the district, ensuring that as many homes and establishments as possible display the national flag on Independence Day.
Vijayalakshmi Maurya, a member of the Bajrang self-help group, shared that their group has been assigned the task of preparing 17,000 flags. She mentioned that more than ten women in the group are dedicated to this effort. They are working diligently to meet the target within the stipulated time. According to Vijayalakshmi, this project generates an income of about 30,000 to 40,000 rupees for them, making it both a contribution to Independence Day preparations and a source of financial support.
Vijayalakshmi emphasized the importance of such work for women in self-help groups. While preparing the flags, the women collaborate and divide tasks to complete them on time. This not only provides work for all group members but also boosts their income. The active involvement of self-help groups at the grassroots level has significantly contributed to creating new employment opportunities for women.
Jitendra Pratap Singh, the Deputy Commissioner of Self-Employment, stated that Jaunpur district has been given the goal of producing five lakh flags this year. He explained that this target is primarily being met through cluster-level self-help groups. Groups in different areas of the district have been assigned flag-making responsibilities according to their capacity, and the women are consistently working to achieve their goals.
He noted that to fulfill the target set under the government’s ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign, women from self-help groups have been engaged. Approximately 20 rupees are paid for each flag prepared at the cluster level. In this process, women associated with self-help groups are ensured a payment of about 2 to 3 rupees per flag. This arrangement significantly enhances the collective income of the women involved in producing a large number of flags.
