Beijing, October 6 (Daily Kiran) : China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sun Lei, addressed the General Assembly’s Second Committee on October 5, urging the international community to enhance global development efforts. She highlighted the significant delays in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, pointing out that the gap between the Global North and South is widening, resources for development are lacking, and the pace of progress is slowing.
Sun Lei proposed four key recommendations to revitalize global development. Firstly, she stressed the importance of maintaining strategic direction. Development should remain at the forefront of the international agenda, closely integrating the actions and goals of the 2030 Agenda with the realities of each country. Additionally, she called for improvements in medium- and long-term strategies, alongside ensuring policy consistency and stability.
Secondly, she emphasized the need to respond to the expectations of people by increasing investments in crucial areas such as poverty alleviation, food and energy security, and environmental protection.
Her third point focused on adopting a practical, action-oriented approach to cooperation. She urged addressing challenges and resolving critical issues that hinder global development collaboration. Developed nations, in particular, must seriously fulfill their commitments regarding development financing and climate funding.
Lastly, Sun Lei called for fostering a spirit of solidarity to build a united, equitable, balanced, and inclusive global development partnership. She noted that this year marks the fifth anniversary of the Global Development Initiative. China is prepared to work with all countries to advance cooperation on this initiative, support the 2030 Agenda, and contribute more to building a prosperous and beautiful world.
