Shillong, July 29: Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar asserted on Tuesday that the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) has provided over eight years of political stability to Meghalaya. He emphasized that the party has focused on governance and development while steering clear of internal power struggles.
While addressing an election rally in the Umdaihar area of Ri Bhoi district, supporting NPP candidate D.R.L. Nonglait for the Shillong Lok Sabha by-election, Deputy CM Dhar compared the party’s tenure to previous governments. He alleged that there were frequent leadership changes in Meghalaya before the NPP came to power.
Dhar stated, “For more than eight years, we have governed Meghalaya without disputes over the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, or other political positions. Our priority has been to serve the people.”
He claimed that previous governments were unstable, with chief ministers being replaced at short intervals, which, according to him, affected governance and development. The Deputy Chief Minister remarked, “Today, Meghalaya has one of the most stable governments. This stability has allowed us to focus on development rather than political infighting.”
Dhar also mentioned that the NPP leadership is centered on public welfare rather than responding to political rhetoric or criticisms from opponents. He urged party workers to avoid divisive language during the campaign and to maintain political decorum.
He said, “We must respect each other and avoid unnecessary personal attacks. The purpose of politics should be to correct mistakes and work together for the welfare of the people, rather than creating divisions.”
While campaigning for Nonglait, Dhar portrayed the NPP candidate as an experienced and grounded leader who understands the challenges faced by rural communities. He expressed confidence that if Nonglait is elected, he will effectively represent Meghalaya’s interests.
Appealing to voters in Ri Bhoi and other parts of the Shillong parliamentary constituency, Dhar stated that electing an MP affiliated with the ruling party would foster better coordination between the state and central governments, accelerating development projects.
He also urged party workers to remain united during the campaign, emphasizing that mutual unity and public support are essential for ensuring the party’s victory in the by-election.
