Beijing, February 19: A team of scientists in China has developed a new lithium battery capable of operating efficiently in extreme cold and heat. This innovative battery is not only safer and more flexible than traditional batteries but also has the potential to revolutionize various sectors, from electric vehicles to wearable electronics.

Led by Professor Xiu Yunhua from Tianjin University and Professor Huang Fei from South China University of Technology, the research team has created a new type of organic material that serves as the battery’s positive electrode (cathode). This groundbreaking research was published online in the prestigious scientific journal ‘Nature’ on Thursday.

Typically, battery production relies on rare and expensive minerals like cobalt and nickel, which have limited mining sources. The organic material used in this new battery is readily available and more environmentally friendly. It can function without issues in temperatures ranging from minus 70 degrees Celsius to 80 degrees Celsius, making it suitable for the world’s coldest and hottest regions.

The energy density of this battery exceeds 250 watt-hours per kilogram, outperforming commonly used lithium iron phosphate batteries. Researchers have tested its durability under bending, stretching, and pressing, and it has maintained its integrity. Most importantly, it successfully passed stringent ‘nail penetration’ safety tests, demonstrating a significantly reduced risk of catching fire or exploding.

According to Professor Xiu Yunhua, this technology marks a crucial step towards creating ‘green batteries’ in the future. Its flexible nature makes it ideal for foldable smartphones, medical devices, and next-generation wearable electronics. The team is now working rapidly to transition this technology from the lab to the market, with plans to establish a commercial production line soon.
