Chennai to Host Voter Registration Camps Across 16 Assembly Constituencies

Chennai is set to organise special voter registration camps across all 16 assembly constituencies on Sunday, covering a total of 4,097 polling stations. This initiative aims to register new voters and assist eligible voters whose names were recently removed from the electoral rolls during the latest revision process.

Comprehensive Revision of Electoral Rolls

Officials from the corporation’s election department explained that this move is part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list initiated in November 2025. Following the revision, a draft voter list was published, revealing that approximately 15 lakh names were deleted from the district’s electoral rolls.

Among those removed, around 1.5 lakh names belonged to voters identified as deceased, while 1.6 lakh names were deleted due to inability to contact voters or verify their current addresses. The majority of the remaining removals were attributed to voters who had shifted residences either within the district or to other assembly constituencies.

Ensuring Eligible Voters Are Included

Election officials clarified that many of these voters remain eligible to vote but were excluded due to incomplete verification during address changes, migration, or the revision process. To prevent eligible voters from missing out, the corporation has arranged extensive special camps at polling stations throughout the district.

An election department official stated, “These camps are designed to help first-time voters register their names and assist those whose names were removed to verify their status and reapply if eligible.”

Final Opportunity for Voter Registration

The special camps are being organised at all 4,097 polling stations within the jurisdiction of Chennai’s 16 assembly constituencies. The deadline to include names in the voter list is 31 January.

Officials urged citizens to take advantage of this final round of special camps before the voter list is finalised. New voters, those who have recently changed their addresses, and individuals whose names were removed from the voter list are advised to visit the camps with valid identification and address proof.

Once verification is complete, the final voter list will be published. Authorities emphasised that inclusive participation is vital to ensuring free and fair elections across all constituencies.
