Chennai, August 22: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has predicted moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds in the city and several surrounding districts. This forecast is attributed to a weak low-pressure system forming in the lower atmospheric layers near the Tamil Nadu coast.
According to the latest weather updates, rain is expected in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Ranipet districts until Sunday.
Meanwhile, similar weather conditions may persist in several districts around the Western Ghats. On Saturday, Chennai is expected to experience partly cloudy skies. Moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, may occur in some areas of the city during the evening or night.
The maximum temperature is anticipated to range between 37 to 38 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may hover around 27 to 28 degrees Celsius.
The weather department has also forecast heavy rainfall in one or two places in the hilly areas of Coimbatore and Nilgiris districts on August 24 and 25. Residents and travelers in these areas are advised to remain vigilant, especially in locations prone to flooding or disruptions due to heavy rain.
From August 26 to 27, light to moderate rain is likely in some areas near the Western Ghats.
The rest of Tamil Nadu is expected to remain mostly dry or partially cloudy, although the possibility of rain cannot be entirely ruled out in certain areas.
No significant changes in maximum temperatures are expected across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal until Sunday. However, a slight increase in daytime temperatures may occur in the interior regions of Tamil Nadu.
In some areas of the state’s interior, maximum temperatures could be 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above normal.
Temperatures in the rest of Tamil Nadu, along with Puducherry and Karaikal, are expected to remain around seasonal averages. The weather in Chennai and its coastal districts may feel humid and uncomfortable due to higher daytime temperatures and humidity levels.
Later in the day, thunderstorms may provide some relief from the heat. Authorities urge the public to exercise caution during thunderstorms, avoid taking shelter under trees, and stay away from open areas during lightning. Drivers are also advised to exercise caution while driving during sudden rain and strong winds.
