New Delhi, September 12 (Daily Kiran) : Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday in New Delhi, on the sidelines of the BRICS summit. The two leaders highlighted that differences should not escalate into disputes and emphasized the need for a strategic and long-term perspective in their bilateral relations.
Following the meeting, a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs noted that both leaders welcomed the steady progress in India-China relations since their previous meeting in Tianjin in August 2025. They reiterated that the two nations should view their relationship with a strategic and long-term lens, stressing that differences should not lead to conflicts. Modi underscored the importance of mutual respect, sensitivity, and interests guiding their interactions.
During the discussions, Modi pointed out that peace and stability in border areas remain essential for the continuous development of bilateral relations. The ministry’s statement further emphasized the need for both sides to adhere to existing agreements regarding border issues. The leaders committed to finding a fair, just, and mutually acceptable resolution to border questions, based on the political context of their overall bilateral relations and the long-term interests of their peoples.
They also acknowledged the progress in mutual ties between their citizens and stressed the importance of enhancing cultural exchanges, trade relations, and mobility between the two countries. The statement highlighted the necessity of addressing economic concerns, including structural trade imbalances and supply chain issues, to facilitate meaningful and predictable market access.
Both leaders agreed to continue expanding their common ground in addressing regional and global challenges. In closing, Modi expressed appreciation for China’s support for India’s BRICS presidency and its contribution to the success of the 2026 BRICS summit.
The meeting included the presence of External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and other officials.
