China Calls for Enhanced South-South Cooperation at UN Event

Beijing, September 12 (Daily Kiran) : China’s temporary representative to the United Nations, Sun Lei, emphasized the importance of strengthening South-South cooperation during a high-level discussion on September 11, coinciding with the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation.

In his remarks, Sun Lei expressed China’s support for a statement made by Uruguay on behalf of the Group of 77 and China. He praised the efforts of the UN’s South-South Cooperation Office in promoting development among nations of the Global South. According to Sun, these countries share a common goal of achieving economic and social development.

He urged nations to adhere to principles of freedom, self-reliance, equality, and mutual benefit. Sun highlighted the need to leverage the strengths of South-South cooperation in capacity building and knowledge sharing, and to foster synergy for development. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to being an active member of the Global South and welcomed the continuous enhancement of South-South cooperation mechanisms and platforms.

Sun Lei expressed hope that relevant collaborations would yield practical results, led by developing countries and driven by demand. He also stressed the necessity for the international community to place development back at the center of the UN agenda. This, he argued, would enable countries in the Global South to participate fairly in international cooperation and share in the benefits of development.
